• Origin and combat history of Germany’s Arado Ar 196

This superb monograph is devoted to the Ar 196, a shipboard reconnaissance aircraft, which became the standard aircraft of the Kriegsmarine throughout World War II.

Loved by its pilots for its superior handling both in the air and on the water, the A-1s were added to coastal squadrons, and continued to fly reconnaissance missions and submarine hunts into late 1944. Two notable operations were the capture of HMS Seal, and the repeated interception of RAF Armstrong-Whitworth Whitley bombers. Although it was no match for a fighter, it was considerably better than its Allied counterparts, and generally considered the best of its class. Owing to its good handling on water, the Finnish Air Force utilized Ar 196 solely on transporting and supplying special forces patrols behind enemy lines, landing on small lakes in remote areas. Several fully equipped soldiers were carried in the fuselage.

This volume includes many rare color profile artworks, detailing the aircraft.

A welcome monograph on a less well known German type

I think every aeronautical publisher believes "You can't go wrong with Germany in World War II". Certainly Polish publisher Kagero believes it; most of its "Monographs" series (of which this is number 45) are of German types.

We get a break from the well known types this time. In the present book the subject is the Arado Ar 196, the shipboard floatplane. (I have been interested in German aircraft of this period for over 40 years. I wish some author would tell me how Arado is pronounced!)

In any event, the monograph is excellent. The 104 pages comprise a background, design, development, and service history, a section of superb line drawings, and some color profiles. Unusually, we also get a number of pages of contemporary technical manual drawings. All is first rate.

The service history leans very heavily on the memoirs of Ulrich Pietsch, who flew as commander and observer in the Admiral Scheer's Ar 196 during its highly successful patrol as a commerce raider. It's a fascinating account; one finds oneself in the uncomfortable position of rooting for the Germans. His memoirs were published in Germany during the war; it's nice to have them available here in English.

The translation is the only flaw of the book. The translation to English has any number of syntax and grammar errors. It's annoying but nothing major.

Highly recommended. I hope we get further lesser covered types from Kagero in the future.

Hmmm...somewhat disappointing

This series seems to have a lot of inside data not readily available in hard-copy form. Alas, what I had hoped would be a good source of tail/squadron codes for German heavy ships was sadly lacking. Nevertheless, the narratives of operations are interesting. Just be aware that the information on the a/c codes carried by major combatants will be lacking. Oh, by the way, the data on details of the aircraft is largely in German and not cross-referenced to English.

About the Author
O. Richard Norton is former director of the Grace Flandrau Planetarium and Science Center at the University of Arizona and the Fleischmann Planetarium at the University of Nevada at Reno. He studied meteoritics under world-renowned meteoriticist Frederick C. Leonard. Norton currently teaches astronomy at Central Oregon Community College and serves as president of Science Graphics, a company that produces instructional science slides for use in college and university classrooms.

Great Meteorite Book

An excellent book for both amateur and professional looking for a refresher on wonderful subject of meteorites, meteors and meteroids. The author covers just about every topic you can think of and with sufficient depth to keep you interested for some time. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the fascinating field.

Why Not Find The Time To Look For Meteorites?

Here's the book you'll need to take along, as meteorites are much easier to find when you know their characteristics and the places where they stand out from other rocks. I've held onto my own copy of Rocks From Space for some time, although I have not gone out hunting for meteorites yet, because this is the book that entices me to make time for it. There are a lot of good quality photographs printed here on slick magazine paper, and some are in color. The book is what it's supposed to be, but if I was going to improve it for someone planning to pack it for a hike across the Utah salt flats, I would suggest that the next edition be on a lighter weight paper. This guide fills you in on the famous meteors (In the sky) and meteorites (Striking the earth) which fell in earth's recorded history. These are great fun to learn about, as there's nothing like a surprise from outer space to brighten up everyone's day. And while meteorites can even impress us as being pretty weird in the modern era, wait until you read about the one that fell in Alsace, France in 1492. It drew so much curiosity and awe that even King Maximilian of Germany came to see it. Many people took souvenir pieces from it over the centuries, but its last 122 pounds are protected by being in a local museum. Another fall Norton records came in 1992, when a car belonging to a young lady was struck. Excited collectors soon made generous offers for both the car and the meteorite. Not too long ago an old meteorite from Mars was sliced open to reveal what many scientists suspect is evidence of past life on that planet. The possibility was considered strong enough that it prompted President Clinton to go on national television to announce it; so if you use this book, you may even help confirm one of the greatest mysteries of all time.

Wonderful Research and Insight!

Anthea Callen trained as a painter. She writes with a painter's insight. She also has a brilliant mind. The book is thoroughly researched. It is written with more emphasis on the materials and physical techniques of the Impressionists than on sociological or philosophical analysis. When she does go into those areas she does so with restraint and great intelligence. I give this book the highest recommendation particularly as a book for painters or for those interested in the intricacies of painting.

Best book on Impressionist painting out there!

This is the best book on Impressionist painting techniques ever written. I can see why copies go for such high prices. I saved up for six months to buy this and I was not disappointed! Well-written and profusely illustrated with artwork and photos. A wonderful addition to my art library and perfect for the art historian. If you are interested in Impressionism, this a must-have. It's not a how-to, but it does tell pretty much how they did it. EXCELLENT!

Impressive but Impractical

This is a very good book (for what it is), but it is quite a difficult read, with much content that has little practical value for most of us. It is a scholarly (i.e., academic) history of opinions and processes that informed Impressionist painting. It is undeniably impressive in its scholarship, its substantive weight, and its physical dimensions--this is a big book having large oversize pages full of single-spaced small print. Its research and detail are, I think, remarkable. Indeed it presents detail upon detail upon technical detail. It is both exhaustive and exhausting. It thoroughly covers many topics that I simply have no need or desire to know about. This is a book for art-history professors.

I had wanted to see this book for two reasons: I wanted to learn to paint like the Impressionists, and I hoped to see their paintings in superior reproductions. In each case, I was disappointed.

The quality of the reproductions is very good (more than adequate to illustrate the text's points), but NOT outstanding. And this definitely is not a how-to-paint lesson manual. If, from this book, you ever learn to paint like the Masters, it will only be indirectly, from inference rather than from clear instruction. And you will need to dig through some fairly thick and sometimes diffuse language to find information you might consider useful. In fact, many of the opinions and processes discussed in the book are contradictory--and (to her credit) the author does not offer her opinion about which ways and opinions were best.

Believe it or not, the foregoing is not meant to disparage the book per se, because it is excellent, FOR WHAT IT IS (and on those particular terms it deserves 4 stars). I have only meant to tell prospective buyers just what it is. This book was not very helpful to me, and I think it would not be very useful to most readers, including most painters and art aficionados.

I'm glad the book exists--it is a genuine scholarly achievement--and if someone were to give it to me as a gift, I'd gratefully recieve it (and I'd probably look at it once in a while). But I would not pay much to buy it. (Borrow it from a public library before deciding to buy.)

international standards

I have used the previous editions very frequently especially during my time working abroad. This is the only comprehensive source of metric and International standards for design data that I am aware of and is organized in very readable way. In fact, when I introduced the book to my co-workers abroad, everyone bought a copy. It is a great book for rules-of-thumb reference for designing buildings, spaces and layouts for national and especially International standards.

Useful book for preliminary design phases

It was in our varsity library where I opened "Neufert" for the first time back in late 70s (they had a two-volume Russian version). Amazingly, then as I studied Architecture I was rather impressed by a broad selection of examples of Western Architecture than by reference data themselves. Now I am more interested in the latter... And the newly edition I have surely provides that! You may blame it for slightly outdated materials or general incompleteness. But, remember, those features are generic for sources like this. Instead the book is useful specifically at preliminary design phases when an architect needs the most general guidelines. You can quickly navigate in a fat volume and can get desired information easily and in full. The only drawback, I think, is that the book is rather based on a continental (mostly German) and British content which can be somewhat inconvenient for, say, an American reader.

This book does an excellent job of demystifying marketing your business online and provides easy to implement actionable steps! Although I understood the basics of SEO and ranking online it still felt overwhelming complex. After reading this book I feel like I finally have the knowledge to really transform my online presence.

Now available in a newly updated edition, GENTLEMAN: A TIMELESS GUIDE TO FASHION, is like having the best features from the pages of ESQUIRE, GQ and the like all collected into one hefty, Handsome Volume.

I've never heard of "male fashion expert" Bernhard Roetzel, but then again, I'm someone whose shaving cream comes out of an aerosol can, which, as it turns out, is servicable while on the go, but not necessarily the daily ideal. Ah, well. He obviously knows his stuff, and that stuff comprises a little more than 350 thick, full-color, crisply designed pages.

Part tutorial, part celebratory, GENTLEMAN covers all men's fashion issues, literally from head to toe. From styles of underwear and the joy of custom-made suits to stuff I don't even think about much less own like umbrellaas and handkerchiefs, the book schools you on all you need to know about becoming a sharp-dressed man.

Oh, one sticking point: You'll obviously need a healthy salary or well-stocked trust fund to pull this stuff off. That's not me, but a man can dream, can't he? That may be why I'm more attued to the brief essays that wax nostalgic over getting a good haircut at the old-school barbershop or the usefulness of a pocketknife.

One can't take all of Roetzel's words as gossip not when the virtues of cigarettes are extolled but all that's missing from this book are sample cologne strips. --Rod Lott Blog:Bookgasm.com

One of the top 3 books ever written on Men's Style

Bernhard Roetzel's book "Gentleman - A Timeless Guide to Fashion" is to put it simply one of the finest books available on menswear. It is comprehensive, full of beautiful images, binded handsomely, and methodically researched. I rate it as one of the three greatest books ever written on mens clothing.

Introduction - Who I am and how do I use this book
My name is Antonio and I own and operate [...], an online custom clothier. I talk with men on a daily basis about how to dress properly, have written over 100 articles on classic men's style, and write for the popular blog The Art of Manliness. I maintain my own personal library on men's style books and have read well over 70 of the most popular ones. I have owned this edition of Gentleman for 6 months, but read the first edition over 8 years ago. I use this book as a source for my writing and every time I read it (5 times now!) I seem to find something new.

Positive - Things I Love about this Book
1. Quality Content - The second edition of "Gentleman" is well researched and most importantly breaks into new thought when it comes to menswear and the lines of thinking in the industry. Where many authors are comfortable just repeating what they have read elsewhere, Berhard has used his experience as a journalist and textile expert to present the reader with a truly unique view fully supported by beautiful images. Within this book you will find information and ideas no other men's clothing expert has articulated. In fact the number and quality of pictures deserves a mention in itself - each page is elegantly laid out and presented so as to be digestible in seconds or chewed on for an hour. He manages to both give you an overview, while offering a deeper insight if you have the time.
2. Quality Build - The book is physically beautiful - the binding is crisp and clean, the pictures true to color, and the text small but readable without glasses.
3. Order in which he presents the subject matter - Bernhard systematically addresses all of the major issues in menswear. Within 350 pages he covers everything from grooming to dress shirts to custom suits.
4. Value - I would have paid $100 for this book - the information is that good. As that it is in print and there are plenty of them, it can be had for 1/5 this cost and is a steal. I own more than one!

Possible Problems
1. European Viewpoint - Bernhard is German, therefore his view points are more European than American. This "problem" is not really a serious one, just something to keep in mind when you find certain items a bit eccentric or if the tone seems to be a bit too stuffy or formal.
2. Overwhelming for some - At 350 pages, this may appear to some as just too large of a book. However, its heavy use of images makes it very easy to read and understand even for a man who gives it a 10 minute glance over.
3. If you own first edition, perhaps not worth the upgrade - There is new material, but over 90% of the content is the same from the 1st edition. What he has brought in are new companies, tailors, and given Italian tailoring more attention - although not enough in my very biased opinion'

Final Recommendation
10 out of 10 stars (5 out of 5 for Amazon!), it is one of the world's top 3 books on men's style. If you buy one book on men's clothing, you cannot go wrong with this one.

Essentially the same book as Gentleman's Guide

If you search for Bernhard Roetzel on Amazon, you will find several books that look very similar but not quite the same, including Gentleman's Guide to Grooming and Style (also in hardcover), Gentleman: A Timeless Fashion (with a red cover), and Gentleman: A Timeless Guide to Fashion (with a pinstripe cover). I was confused as to whether these were revised and updated editions, re-printings, or what, so I ordered them all. Here is what I found.

Roetzel is a German who makes a living writing about style for outlets with which I am generally not familiar. For some reason, he writes about English style. Of course, Germans--that is German nobility, or German "gentlemen"--had their own styles at one time. Just as there was an English suit and an Italian suit, there is or was a German suit, and some style choices that were considered faux pas in England were acceptable in Germany and vice versa. Perhaps this is no longer the case, but whatever the situation, Roetzel is a German Anglophile and he writes about English style. Accordingly, the first book seems to have been a 1990s-era German book called "Der Gentleman" (I don't have this one) a guide for Germans to the English gentlemen.

Der Gentleman was then translated into English as "Gentleman's Guide to Grooming and Style." With typically German thoroughness, Gentleman's Guide provides a very complete and detailed guide to the clothing and toileting of an English gentleman. Methodically arranged and well-illustrated with high-quality photos, Gentleman's Guide is somewhere in between a coffee-table book and a reference book. You will find out not only about different types of shirt collars but also see beautiful photos of a typical English breakfast and find advice on what to wear when riding horseback. The only thing comparable I have found are Alan Flusser's books, but they are not quite the same. Flusser is focused on educating the reader to be aware of when buying a suit or choosing clothes to wear to the office or a night out. Roetzel is more focused on documenting the clothes and lifestyle of a certain class, place, and time period.

Gentleman's Guide was a Barnes & Noble Book and for some reason came out as a paperback first. It came out as a hardcover several years later under the same name and with no changes. Then H.F. Ullmann produced a book called Gentleman: A Timeless Fashion, followed a year later by Gentleman: A Timeless Guide to Fashion. This last book is a hardcover with a pinstripe design rather than the well-known red cover. It turns out that Gentleman: A Timeless Guide to Fashion is almost exactly the same book as the original Gentleman's Guide. For the most part, only cosmetic changes have been made. The graphic design has been updated with new fonts, colors, and layout. A few paragraphs have been replaced by new ones here and there. A few illustrations have been replaced. The biggest change is the absence of the blonde, blue-eyed model who graced both the outside cover of the Gentleman's Guide as well as the chapter headings.

When I tried to order Gentleman: A Timeless Fashion, I got sent a copy of the Gentleman's Guide instead, which just goes to show how close they are. (Although I can't say for sure, I'd be willing to bet that A Timeless Fashion is exactly the same as Gentleman's Guide, and was simply produced before H.F. Ullmann decide to make the cosmetic changes in A Timeless Guide to Fashion.)

From my perspective, A Timeless Guide to Fashion was a small step backwards from the Gentleman's Guide. Any man who is really interested in these books is probably more likely to enjoy the older fonts and design choices over the newer ones. Moreover, the red cover and model were distinctive. If I were shopping for one of these books today, I would get a copy of the Gentleman's Guide or A Timeless Fashion and forgo A Timeless Guide to Fashion altogether.

As for a general review of these books, it almost goes without saying that a true gentleman would never own or rely on one. The material is so detailed as to be almost a send-up of the English gentleman rather than a sartorial exploration. Moreover, the contention of the book's forward, that a gentleman is any man who lives and conducts himself in a certain manner, is a modern democratic conceit. Most of the material objects and lifestyle shown in this book are beyond the reach of 95% of its intended audience. And with moola', one would still need to combine leisure and birth. However, for me this does not detract from the enjoyment of the book because, like Roetzel, I am something of an Anglophile. For the $20 sunk cost of this book, I can sit down any time I want with a Glenlivet or Veuve Clicquot and be transported for 30 minutes. This is the consideration you have to make when considering whether to buy one of Roetzel's books. Are you looking for help choosing the right suit for the right occasion, or are you a fan of a lost male culture? If you are looking to educate yourself about clothes, buy one of Flusser's books; if you are looking for escape or inspiration, Roetzel is the way to go. (Another purchasing consideration is the gift. One of these books would make a great gift, and at this price for A Timeless Guide to Fashion--a new hardcover full-color glossy--it would be hard to go wrong.)

Such a wonderful reference book!

I must admit that I have a slightly traditional taste for men's wear. This is by far one of the best books out there that you can buy to get a well-rounded idea of what items you should think of when you are at a certain age (like me, just got a job and begin to make some money) to set up your own wardrobe. Of course, maybe not for those who wear jeans or T-shirts five days a week.

I also use this as a reference book. The book helped me set up a good idea of what is a good style. Such as: shoes are one of the most important items you should invest. Why you need a navy blazer, grey flannel trousers. What kind of overcoat you should buy. What's the culture and history behind a Barbour wax jacket. A list of all the best vendors for shoes, suits, neckties etc. The book is well illustrated and have a large number of detailed pictures.

I ensure you that after you read the book, your eyes would be much sharper and you yourself might turn a little bit snobbish when you are selecting clothes for yourself or looking at others' outfits.

Trust me, at this price, it's a wonderful buy. (BTW, I also read Alan's book as mentioned by others. His books, though well written, are mainly on suits and are not as practical as this one.)

Eloquent, attractive, and insightful

Stephen Houston is a well-respected scholar and the author of a dozen key books on Maya archaeology, epigraphy and art — e.g., Classic Maya Place Names (1994), Function and Meaning in Classic Maya Architecture (1998), Royal Courts of the Classic Maya (2001), The First Writing (2008), The Classic Maya (2009), Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea (2010) and The Shape of Script (2012), to name only several of the most salient. All of them are well worth reading for anyone interested in how we know what we know about Classic Maya art and writing.

But for my money, this well written and beautifully illustrated book tops them all, for it presents the researches of a true pioneer in the study of Classic Maya materiality. Twenty-five years ago, Stephen Houston (along with co-authors Karl Taube and David Stuart) began the study of the folk classification of Maya pottery (and related objects that the Maya labeled with their emic designations, and referenced and framed in ways deeply revelatory of their significance). These authors demonstrated that the Maya categorized their material remains in manners at once foreign to Western approaches yet nonetheless accessible to us in the form of ancient writing, in the symbolism embedded in their iconographies, and in the material remains and patterns inherent in architecture, ceramics, site settlement and more besides. Houston's approach has both matured and deepened over the years, and this tour-de-force revisits the topic of Maya materiality with the perspective of a scholar who has both contributed to and benefited from the ongoing decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing and art. It should be on the bookshelf of every serious student and interested amateur.

A unique book on a unique civilization.

Over the past century and a half many hundreds of books have been written about the ancient Maya, but there has never been anything like this one, a masterful and brilliant study of the relation between the material world of the Maya and their own mental constructs. Only someone with Houston's hieroglyphic expertise and artistic sensibility could have written such a study. Eloquently written and beautifully illustrated, I recommend it to everyone interested in the intriguing and sophisticated civilization of the Maya.

Making ancient objects speak!

This is an erudite but accessible text that gives voice to ancient Maya materials. If you are visiting a museum to see Maya artifacts, or traveling to Chichen Itza, Tikal or Copan, this will give you a far deeper understanding of everything you see.
