*Amazing Zentangle Art Book*

This Zentangle book has it all! It is simply Awesome! If you are new or old to Zentangle, you are going to LOVE this book. It starts with tools of the trade and explains what Zentangle is and swiftly moves on to the 50 inspiring projects and designs to make (which you can branch off to use with your own ideas and that makes the ideas limitless!). This is a nice meaty book. For those of you used to the small, more limited books or ten page instruction books, this book will make you smile - widely!

There are four CZTs who authored this book so there are different flavors of Zentangle to enjoy. This book also goes beyond the tiles. They have their purpose naturally, but this book recommends different papers and pens and things to use as well as so many new ideas to expand your Zentangle Art. This is the Zentangle Book as far as I am concerned. There are a few that I really adore and enjoy, but none of them compare to this one. This book is my new favorite! Not only is the format large, it's also a workbook with plenty of space to try the new tangles and all of the ideas presented in the book. From birds and fish to detailed fairies, to frames, mandalas and glitter Zentangle, this wonderful book gives you lots of fresh ideas that could become frameable art around the house!

The Art Of Zentangle shows you step by step many cool tangles-from easy to difficult. The projects are presented in stages with many of the final versions shown with bright colors!

I can't say enough good about this book! I love, love, love it and I would give it 10 stars if possible. If you are curious about Zentangle, get this book! If you are not new to Zentangle, get this book! If you've put away your Zentangle stuff and want a fresh, new look, you know what I'am going to say...Get this book!!

This would be a fantastic book to keep a teen busy or someone wanting to do art but who can "only doodle;"-- I got it for myself

I am an artist and simply became intrigued looking through this book when I was shopping for books on mixed media and encaustic. There were a few zentangle books on Amazon (I'd never heard of zentangle prior to this shopping search experience) but this one seemed to have some of the coolest designs that appeared more organic than like Indian prints. (I am not sure how else to describe my choice via the comparisons of the suggestions Amazon gave me when shopping other than that.)

Many years ago I owned a pottery painting studio and I have thought so many times since about the woman who worked for days on a large platter and did it all in black and white with these simply tiny designs...the thing was FANTASTIC when she was done. I tried to copy it once out of memory and couldn't. As soon as I saw books on "Zentangle" I realized it must be an art form I was unaware of.

This is basically very cool doodles you could do with a sharpie marker. The book is filled with practice pages and filled with loads of ideas. What's ideal about that is it could keep a teen busy for hours learning to create these designs and be able to use them over and over. What's great for ME is that it lends itself to creating a very cool art piece of your own in any time you have to simply sketch out more and more designs. I plan to buy a large sheet of watercolor paper or use it on a large canvas that I can later frame and just leave it out on my dining room table to play with as I have time.

Even better, you could create an awesome art piece that your entire family makes together. If you look through the book you see this is simply about learning to make the basic shapes then fill in the spaces between them after you create the shapes so that you have endless doodles everywhere. What I love about the book is that it's not just abstract shapes. It also shows you how to add in organic elements like a hummingbird or fish in your work, and fill them in with the Zentangles.

I get the "Zen" part of the name as well. Art takes your mind away from anything troubling it, and the repetitive strokes and creation are very Zen and very peaceful elements for the mind.

This would be an amazing book to have should you ever know anyone sick or in the hospital as there is little to do sitting in bed and reading and the TV grow tiresome. Bring them this and a box of thin tip markers and you'd likely be loved for it. This could create hours of fun and result in actually learning a new hobby that could parlay into some cool art pieces for one's home. Better yet, they take your mind away from pain when you do activities like this...

The book intrigued me as I flipped through what pages I could see on Amazon. The book thrilled me far more once I got it. Very simple instructions and step by step guides for the beginner but cool enough designs to remain intrigued as you become an expert.

I loved this book of Zentangle designs!! I have used its ideas & designs almost everday! I make cards & design art projects using zentangles. It is so relaxing and hard to put down! This book is excellent for teaching zentangle and makes it nice to develop some of your own designs because it has special places on most pages to draw your own ideas. I was looking through it yesterday and noticed a design I really liked and realized it was my design! Anyone looking for excellent artistic drawing ideas will love it! Thanks to Amazon this book was a great price!

The Bible of Green Yeast

This book is THE reference on Chlamydomonas, the single celled alga sometimes called "green yeast". The sourcebook contains detailed protocols for working with this organism, as well as comprehensive information about its cell biology, metabolism, etc. The only drawback is that this book is somewhat old, and was written before many of the molecular tools for working with Chlamydomonas were perfected, such as transformation or positional cloning using BAC libraries. Still, anyone interested in Chlamydomonas MUST get this book.

This is indeed THE BOOK for Chlamydomonas research. Our lab copy is in constant use, and we are very careful about lending it out (failure to return it in a timely manner is punishable by racking pipette tips and or autoclaving the trash).
Fortunately, a new edition of this book is in the works. It is my understanding that it will be a comprehensive three volume set.

Its transition into audio format is impressive: taken from oral tradition, it's tellable and starkly poetic, while the deep rich voice of narrator Russell Means with his Native American inflections does much to enhance its power and authenticity. The story is compelling. Abandoned by their tribe during a brutal winter famine, two old women are left to perish on their own. Although they've grown used to complaining and letting others do for them, the two resolve not to wait passively for death but to fight against it. With trapping skills they haven't used for years and strengthened by their bond of friendship, the two women survive the winter to ultimately come face to face with the members of their tribe, none of whom has fared as well as they. Utterly convincing in its details and resolution, this will offer listeners in seventh grade and up vivid insight into a Native American culture. At the same time, it rises above the particulars of time and place to become a metaphor with a message or inspiration not only for students, women or the elderly, but for all members of the human race.

Growing up Gwich'in (one of the 11 distinct ethnic peoples of Alaska) in Fort Yukon, closer to the Arctic Circle than Fairbanks, Wallis had been hearing all her life the legend of the two old women abandoned to die by their starving tribe. Their own children abetted the cruel (not, incidentally, just to Western civilization) tribal decision. Wallis' rendition in serviceable prose of this culturally famous story is somewhere between translation and what is sometimes called re-creation. The tale (which has a happy ending) deserves a place in every regional collection but has a greater appeal, too. Roland Wulbert

Life Affirming

I loved this book. I can't wait to give it to my 88-year-old mother to read. It's such an affirmation of the dignity and wisdom of older age. My review may spoil the story for you so proceed cautiously from here.

Two Old Women is based on an Athabascan Indian legend. A starving tribe of Alaskan natives leaves two old women alone in the freezing cold to die, because every mouthful of food is precious, and these two are unhelpful. They don't contribute to the tribe; they take from it. People have to help them. They complain constantly.

Once the tribe leaves them, though, they must decide whether to accept the death sentence or not. The younger woman, 75, says we might die anyway, but if that is so, let's at least die trying to live. So they adopt that motto. At least let's die trying. They manage to avert death by recalling long-unused knowledge of survival skills. In spite of their old, achy bodies, they thrive and bond with each other, but they are lonely and sad.

Eventually, there's a happy ending, which I'll let you discover for yourself. If you're like me, you'll reread it, crying with joy each time.

But the message of this book is multi-faceted. Elders can and should continue to contribute until the end. Youth should respect the elders for their valuable knowledge. All people benefit from this synergy.

Two Old Women is a short book. I read it in one evening. I heartily recommend it, particularly to those who are older and feeling ignored, useless, or confused. This book will get you up and moving, and it will make you happy.

This is a wonderful book for thoughtful discussions on peaceful so-existance

I love this story. It is a wonderful lesson for everyone. In every conflict there is more than one person. The community in the book lives on in harsh conditions and everyone has to be in harmony for everyone to survive. When the animosity between two women becomes too disruptive, they are given a punishment and to survive they need to come together. One woman is the obvious villain but the other has to learn to accept her role in the conflict. On the surface, she appears innocent but after careful consideration, her flaws emerge. She never once tried to defuse the situation or help the other woman. This is a wonderful book for discussion.

Beautiful!

It's a stirring old Athabascan Indian tale. In the midst of a famine, the tribe regretfully decides they must leave behind those who are a burden for the tribe so that the tribe as a whole can be saved. Two old women are forced to remain behind while the tribe moves to hopefully better hunting grounds. They know this is a virtual death sentence for the two women, but they feel they have no choice or they will all die.

It is not a political book but mirrors what happens with welfare as opposed to those who take responsibility for themselves and learn the self-esteem that comes as a result. These two old women were content to let others care for them and acted helpless while constantly complaining about their comfort levels, so the tribe came to believe that they were indeed a burden to the tribe that they could no longer support.

The two old women, after their initial shock, decided they would not just passively wait to die but to do what they could to survive. They learned new survival skills and honed long-disused skills to keep themselves alive, and in the process, they learned self-esteem and independence, one day at a time.

When the tribe came back in the spring, sadly expecting to find them dead, they were awed and thrilled to find the two old women proudly waiting for them, alive and in better shape than the rest of the tribe. They earned new respect, both from the tribe and for themselves, and a permanent sense of independence.

The story is very touching and profound at a very simple level...one of my favorite books. I've bought several copies to give away as gifts. It's a testament to the human spirit and what it can do. No one knows if it is a true story or not, but the spiritual truths are obvious.

The author states: "Within each individual on this large and complicated world, there lives an astounding potential greatness." The book demonstrates this truth beautifully. Thanks, Velma!

I love this series

I have been using the All Clear series for years and my students really enjoy and benefit from, not only the idioms, some of which are rather common, but also from the vast array of activities and expansion that is possible with the idioms. I love the error finding exercise and as simple as the prepositions appear to us, they teach things to them. I've really worked on their writing skills by having them devise their own dialogues with the situations suggested and developed their speaking skill using the discussions that evolve from the questions that are posed. What appears to be rather routine in the beginning really produces a greater understanding of culture and use of the selected idioms.

In the fifteenth century, when Europe was not long out of the medieval age, the two halves of the Roman Empire were spiritually divided. Within Europe, the church was plagued by infighting among different factions of the clergy. The Renaissance had just begun. Europe was on the brink of a cultural revolution when a catalyst named Gutenberg invented the printing press. In this study, Man puts Gutenberg and the printing press in historical context by giving detailed pictures of the political situation in Europe at the time, on an international scale all the way down to a city level. He gives technical details on how a printing press works, and how to craft the movable type. In addition he gives a biography of the man, and attempts to construct a chronology of his publications. Man offers much speculation to fill holes in the historical record, but is very clear about what is generally accepted fact, and what is not. Compared to the printing press revolution, the Internet one is small potatoes. Before Europe's first printed book in 1455, information was carried in hand-copied volumes so expensive they could be owned only by priests and aristocrats. Then in "a historical eyeblink," John Man writes, a book that took two months to copy by hand could be turned out at the rate of 500 a week. Little is known with certainty about Johann Gutenberg, the man behind the change, not even his year of birth (traditionally given as 1400). But Man suggests that Gutenberg may have developed printing technology while trying to cash in on a craze in the 1430's for small mirrors, used by pilgrims to capture the healing powers of relics at Charlemagne's tomb. The mirror-making venture bogged down in legal disputes between Gutenberg and his partners, but surviving court records contain mysterious references to "another secret art" -- perhaps the hand-held mold that could mass-produce metal type. Gutenberg intended to make a fortune publishing the first universal missal, but when clerics could not agree on an authorized text, he settled on his second choice, the Bible. By 1500, more than 15 million books had been printed in Europe. Loved it until the end

Little is know about the history of Gutenberg's invention, and the history of the man himself. John Man does an excellent job of bringing this story to life. Placing Gutenberg in historical context, and infusing the tale with rich background color to give you a feel of 15th century Europe.
But at the end of the book there is a very protracted story of how Martin Luther used printing to further his cause. This goes on way to long, twenty plus pages. If I wanted to read so much about Luther, I would get a book about Luther!
If it was not for this last part, I would easily have given this book five stars. I am a printer by profession, and I also teach about printing at a local community college. I love printing history, and this book is now a proud member of my library on the subject.
Man spins a very good tale about the birth of this profession, that has not been covered very well before. Writing with such zeal and humor as if he is speaking directly to this reader.

Primarily Historical Secondarily Biographical

I have had the privilege of seeing pages of a Gutenburg Bible. There is only one complete Bible that remains in a private collection, and the balance are part of the inventories of museums or places like The Library of Congress. An exceptional example can be found at The Morgan Library in NYC, and thanks to a special group of people the work can also be viewed on the internet. To give an idea of the value of one of these Bibles, the last single page I saw at an antiquarian book show was priced at $30,000. If an entire book were to come to auction the price it would bring would be measured in many millions of dollars. William Gates, CEO of Microsoft, paid in excess of $35,000,000 for the Leicester Codex, a one of a kind notebook from the pen of Leonardo Da'Vinci. That is the record ever paid for a single, "book".
As momentous a contribution that Gutenburg gave the world details about his life are few. Even when he had established himself as a printer of some renown, there are many years, and even groups of years that are blank, or filled by only supposition. There are times that the recording of a lawsuit is all that are available to document where he was at a given point in time. And as with many inventions that have changed the course of history, there are the usual arguments over who actually invented what, and then there are the pretenders that history had accepted for centuries.
Those expecting a biography of the inventor will not be satisfied by this book. This is less the fault of the writer than the lack of documentary evidence about the subject. What the reader is given in great detail is a description of history before during and after the printing press became a reality. The Bible that is so routinely associated with the name of Gutenburg has certain volumes that are not only exceptional for the type but also for the decoration that was produced. The fragment of the picture on the cover only hints at the beauty of these books.
And this is the greatest criticism I have of this book. The work of Gutenburg was visual, and in many examples exceptionally beautiful. I cannot reconcile these facts with a book that offers a single black and white photograph of one page of this historic Bible. The invention of the press that Gutenburg created is exceptional, and exceptionally complicated. All the reader is offered is a brief description on how complicated it is, and two pages with a handful of drawings that raise more questions than they answer. The author should have let readers decide how much effort they wished to invest to understand this invention rather than presuming readers would be pleased with the barest of details.
If you have never read anything about this topic, the book will serve you better than if you already have knowledge in excess of the name of the man and what he created. The author also makes note of the idea that someday all books could be in electronic form and stored in, "hyperspace". I hope he meant cyberspace.
