Fantastic!

I use this with both my foster/adopted children and the children in my PreK classroom. It is effective and easy for children to understand. The front of the book has excellent tips and background information on the "redo" method. Cindy Lee's books are fantastic! My parenting and classroom management has greatly benefited.

About the Author
"Russ Hibbeler "graduated from the University of Illinois-Urbana with a B.S. in Civil Engineering (major in structures) and an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University. Hibbeler's professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, Sargent and Lundy, Tucson. He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana. He has taught at the University of Illinois-Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College. Hibbeler currently teaches at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Yes, please!

I LOVE Hibbeler's Statics. I do not like his other books.

Statics is one of those that typically comes straight after one has taken a basic linear algebra course, and said student is probably in the midst of either an electromagnetics physics course (good for learning about those vector properties!) or a physics course focusing on optics/waves (great for getting more practice with trigonometry!). There's probably a bit of overlap, and the fundamental idea of Statics (namely that the sum of forces go to zero since nothing is moving and everything balances itself out) is such a simple one that as the book progresses one feels more confident in one's ability to do the problems.

Indeed, because make no mistake. This is first and foremost a hardcover workbook--legends say there are more problems in a Hibbeler textbook than there are atoms in the universe! And that's just in the first chapter!

And Hibbeler excels in giving you problems, too. You're not regurgitating the same problem with an extra load bearer or with a roller instead of a rocker for support. No, you are given I'm pretty sure every possible problem you could ever expect to need to thoroughly examine any structure you want. And his examples, oh, wow, he couldn't be more descriptive if he tried, and he's very clear on emphasizing the section's learning objectives in each so you actually can tackle all those varying problems of his. Typically, a student goes "I can do this type of problem, but show me this other type and I just can't." That doesn't feel an issue here, and problems flow nicely from simple to hair-pulling difficult.

And because the underlying nature of Statics isn't a difficult one, not only is this perfect for self-study, but it's also perfect for getting in shape for an FE exam.

Not a very good textbook in my opinion. Hibbeler solves problems in the most difficult way possible when my professor makes them so much easier. Doesn't do a great job at explaining example problems either.

No More American Dream- The Poverty Nightmare

These are individual case samples of poverty stricken Americans who have had their hopes, goals, and dreams for a better life smashed to pieces on page 126 Mr. Jerome Greene tells his story "It's been like hell," he says. "It's very hard to see people leave and go to work in the morning and come home every night. It's hard to see people spending money, going out and having fun and you can't. It's very stressing. Greene, about to turn 50, worked for 16 years as an Oracle software developer, most recently at a Pennsylvania company that made electronic components for cars. When he was laid off in June 2008, the recession was just taking hold, and he still had job interviews. By fall, with the economy in free fall, his phone stopped ringing." On page 121 Mr. J.R. Childress shares his experience "He's determined to stay busy, job or no job, for sanity's sake. Maybe he'll help a neighbor. Exercise. Or check out computer blueprints of construction projects around Winston-Salem, N.C., to stay connected to the world where he thrived for three decades. Childress has been laid off twice since late 2009, most recently for 10 months." On page 47 we have "Magdalyn March, 30, of Birmingham, Ala., can relate to those living in extreme poverty. in 2006, she lost a seasonal job at a packing warehouse, split with an abusive boyfriend and was caring for her two children."

These are everyday Americans whose country America has given them a swift kick to the curb of poverty.

Very boring. Just a bunch of statistics. Gives a great overview of the history of poverty in terms of morality and politics. Contributes to the colorblindness of current social measures. This is a good intro book to poverty.

Retitle to CISSP Prep Guide

For some reason this huge book is mistitled. It should be called “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Security” or “The CISSP Preparation Guide”. At 699 pages in hardcover, along with a CD filled with additional material, you could hurt someone with this book. It is big and powerful in a literary and physical sense.

Nobody has ever said that security is a small topic. This guide illustrates the depth and vastness of our field in an elegant way. At first glance, you may be intimidated by the enormous amount of information filled through all the pages and across all the chapters. Robin Abernathy and Troy McMillian did a great job of picking apart all the subtopics that are needed to know if you want to pass the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner certification.

More importantly, this book is an excellent prep guide for taking the CISSP and for getting a good job in this ever growing profession. The pay is good here, too. To be completely honest, the pay is damn good in this field and there is a massive shortage of qualified people in this profession. Grab this book and start learning.

Now for the bad news. This is my own opinion and has nothing to do with the great work that the authors did on this book. The CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner is being advertised as a big step up from their Security + certification. For those of you who don’t know, the Security + is a baby step certificate. It is a license to get your foot in the door, to learn even more.

The CASP is an 85 question exam. I was at first shocked to read this in the book until I began laughing at the meaning of this. My daughter in elementary school has exams that have this many questions on them. The permit to register my dog has this many questions on it. For all you certificate-touting security folks out there, here is a quick and easy cert to add to your last name. For the length and depth of information in this guide written by Robin Abernathy and Troy McMillian, I was expecting a heck of a better exam than 85 questions.

The exam is pass or fail according to this book. What constitutes a pass versus a fail in unknown and not listed. In some exams, 70% is a passing grade. If the CASP requires a 70% passing grade out of 85 questions, than getting your name correct on the exam is half the battle. The CISSP is 250 questions, of which 50 questions are demo questions to see if those questions should be used in other exams. Weird, huh? However, a bachelor’s degree is four years of studying and testing. A master’s is another two years of more intense and deeper studying. A PhD in Cyber Security, which I’m working on, is quite a bit into the realm of ridiculously intense research and study.

Based on Department of Defense Directive 8570, you will qualify for more jobs with a CASP and even more with a CISSP than I will with a PhD. It doesn’t make sense but it doesn’t have too because it’s the government, enough said.

Now, back to the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner. Don’t start reading the introduction if you aren’t sure about taking the CASP. The introduction will scare the heck out of you because it covers such a huge amount of information and topics. Security is an ocean. You will need to know the top ½ of the surface of one harbor in that ocean to pass either the CASP or the CISSP. The book introduction gives you a good picture of how deep that ocean really is and it’s scary if you’ve never pondered the reality of this profession.

So don’t read the intro unless you are ready to understand how deep the rabbit hole goes. The authors did a good job of scaring you with the introduction. They do an even better job of scaring you with the first chapter on Cryptology. Most other security books place this topic near the middle or back of the book. Not Robin and Troy, they go right for your weak spot. Theory and practical application are covered quite well. They kept to the basics of each topic, which is a nice refresher for me but might be a bit much for others new to the field.

Each chapter has Key Topic markers letting you know that you might want to pay attention to this page or paragraph. The problem is, the whole book is a key topic. Every word written is important even though it probably won’t be on the 85 question exam. The chapters end with a review of concepts and multiple choice questions. The questions are worded to reflect exactly what you would expect from the exam because the book is written by the folks who made the certification.

The book even comes with information on how and where to take the test plus a 10% off exam voucher. If I haven’t made myself clear enough, this guild is much more than an exam prep for the CASP. This book is an excellent primer for the CISSP; it just isn’t broken down into the ten domains of that exam. Think about it this way, if you read this book and take the CASP you are about 80% towards taking the CISSP exam with that knowledge. It is worth the price to grab this Pearson Certification book followed by one CISSP prep book. Then, you’ll have two very good certs and a nice job while I’m still serving hamburgers at a fast food joint with my PhD.

Great book, puts you in a fast track and ...

Great book, puts you in a fast track and does not lose time on things you were suppose to know at this level.
However, cryptography points scattered on the book could use extra work, as the first chapter does. Cryptography seems to be to weakest part of the book, strangely with a dedicated first chapter. I would recommend skipping the first chapter if you have a cryptography background, but it is a good start if the concepts seems unfamiliar, it is presented in a professional language, maybe an academic book would be a nice complement to this reading.
Overall, it is a massive source of knowledge, nicely organized for learning and reviewing (I will keep this book around).

Passed on the first try with significant assistance from this book.

Got this for my wife who is not a security engineer but was required to get a mid level IT security certification. Upon first reading I was aghast at how difficult it was to get a grasp of the material from just reading this book - and I have an MS in CS from a top tier grad school. After speaking with others in the IT field, I discovered that the certification is intended for people that already have some experience working as professional IT security engineers. This book seems intended for such experienced people. After my wife took (and passed) the exam, and after looking at materials she was provided by a training class in advance of the exam, I realized that this book actually covered more of the concepts and definitions included on the exam than any other reference material we used. In fact, there was nothing on the exam that was not covered in this book. Even the language and writing style seemed consistent with that used on the actual exam.

In his life in the stock and options markets, Mr. Kirkpatrick has been a hedge fund manager, investment advisor, advisor to floor and desk traders and portfolio managers, institutional stock broker, options trader, desk and large-block trader, lecturer and speaker on aspects of technical analysis to professional and academic groups, expert legal witness on the stock market, owner of several small businesses, owner of an institutional brokerage firm, and part owner of a CBOE options trading firm. His research has been published in Barron’s and elsewhere. In 1993 and 2001, he won the Charles H. Dow Award for excellence in technical research, and in 2009, he won the MTA award for his contributions to technical analysis. Educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard College (A.B.) and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (M.B.A.), he was also a decorated combat officer with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. He currently resides in Maine with his wife, Ellie, and their various domestic animals.

Julie R. Dahlquist, Ph.D., received her B.B.A. in economics from University of Louisiana at Monroe, her M.A. in Theology from St. Mary’s University, and her Ph.D. in economics from Texas A&M University. Currently, she is a senior lecturer, Department of Finance, at the University of Texas at San Antonio College of Business. Dr. Dahlquist is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences. She is the coauthor (with Richard Bauer) of Technical Market Indicators: Analysis and Performance (John Wiley & Sons). Her research has appeared in Financial Analysts Journal, Journal of Technical Analysis, Managerial Finance, Applied Economics, Working Money, Financial Practices and Education, Active Trader, and in the Journal of Financial Education. She serves on the Board of the Market Technicians Association Educational Foundation, on the editorial board of the Southwestern Business Administration Journal, and as a reviewer for a number of journals, including the Journal of Technical Analysis. She resides in San Antonio with her husband, Richard Bauer, and their two children, Katherine and Sepp.

Kirkpatrick: Technical Analysis

The second edition of Charles Kirkpatrick's (2011) Technical Analysis: The Complete Resource For Financial Market Technicians is as good as (or even better) than the Fidelity Technical Analyst stated. I went to another Fidelity training session and this book was presented as the best single technical analysis book currently available. The writing style was clear and was accessible to the "intelligent layman." If you happen to have a long-term background in trading as well as a strong fundamental understanding of statistics (especially regression analysis), you will appreciate the depth of coverage and the references to other sources. This is a fine text for a technical analysis course and is also an excellent source of information about many aspects of technical analysis. The text is 671 pages long. The index is 34 pages long. The reference section is 25 pages long. There is a section on basic statistics in an appendix as well as a glossary of technical terms. On a scale of ten I give this book a "ten" and I have never previously given a book such a high rating.

Important reading even for mid-term and long-term investor

I begin my investment by using the value investing approach. "Securities Analysis" and "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham are excellent books on value investing. They taught me how to pick stock based on fundamental analysis and give me great advice on investment - be patient, look for great business with great management, insist on margin of safety, future value is a function of present price, sell to optimists and buy from pessimists. I did make good profits by following Benjamin's advice. However, very often I buy too early when the stock price is falling and I sell too early when the stock price is rising. I can do much better if I had read this book. This book tells me how to measure market strength, why trend analysis is important, when to buy and when to sell by using various indicators, oscillators and patterns, how to confirm signal with volume. Now I can enter and exit a position with more confidence and most importantly, I make more money than before and loss less. I even allocate a portion of money specifically for short-term trading. I highly recommend this book to traders and value investors. Besides, "How to make money in stocks" by William J. O'Neil is a good companion to this book. William's book introduces his CAN SLIM method to pick stock and shows a lot more real life examples of patterns.
After the economic crisis in 2008, I think trend analysis becomes more important in investment as the market fluctuation is more frequent and violent and causes the buy-and-hold strategy less effective. I still use the value investing approach to pick stocks, but I need to act like a trader at the entry point and exit point to improve my profit margin.

KINDLE version is GARBAGE!

I bought the e-book version of this text and all of the figures and charts are completely illegible on the Kindle app for the iPad. The importance of understanding the figures presented on this complex topic can not be understated. I was completely frustrated by the low resolution (aka "fuzziness") of the figures. The resolution of most figures is so poor that most of the book's figures are worthless. The text itself is wonderfully written, so I can not begin to express my frustration with the figures and charts. How can they sell this text as an e-book? Its completely unacceptable! Save yourself the frustration and skip the Kindle version of this text.
