Good for a question book, but better board review options are out there

As far as practice question books go, this is right on the money. There's tons of practice questions, split up by clerkship (which helps if you're studying for shelf exams). The explanations are good at showing not only why the correct answer is correct, but why the other options are wrong. I didn't give it 5 stars since the questions are a bit on the shorter side compared to the real board. But other than that, it's good review.

Actually, my biggest complaint is not with the book per se, but that if you're serious about practicing for the boards, you're better off going with an online qbank. While they're more expensive than this Qbook, you get much more content, better explanations, and you can tailor your studying to your weak areas.

But as far as QBooks go, I'd recommend this one.

Good and loved the price

I love doing practice questions (much better than reading review books), so when I saw this one and the good price, I had to have it. While going through the questions, I didn't notice many mistakes or typos, and the topics seemed fairly similar to the real thing.

I ended up only studying from this Qbook and 1 other review book before Step 2. My hope was to avoid having to buy other materials (specifically I didn't want to shell out for another online question bank). Although I didn't feel too great on the day of the test, I ended up with a good score (>245).

Useful for the Step 2CK!

I own the 2009 edition of this book, so I'm going to review that. While I didn't use the book as my primary question source (it is strongly advisable to use one of the popular online qbanks (Usmle World/Kaplan/Usmle Rx) for that as they are more thorough), this book was very useful to me during the last few weeks of my step 2CK to help me assess my "readiness".

According to an online seminar of Kaplan Medical I once heard, Dr. Steven Daugherty (author of the study skills and exam strategies section included in this book) mentioned that if you consistently score (in multiple blocks in timed format) between 60-65% correct you are going to either get a low pass or borderline fail; between 65-70% you are going to pass; and greater than 70% you are going to score high. So this qbook was very helpful to me in giving me my percentage scores of each subject discipline as I did them in a timed manner.

But to get a more accurate idea of my score, I used First Aid's Step 2CK Q&A which has an 8 block exam to simulate the exam experience (in addition to questions according to organ system/subject wise). This was also a good resource that I used during my last week before the exam. I did 4 blocks from the simulation exam and scored 66%. I also did the latest free 3 block exam from the USMLE website and scored 72%. I scored well on the actual exam.

Most people use NBMEs to give them their predictive score to assess their exam readiness and that can be helpful. I also used them. But I found the percent scale system of Dr. Daugherty much more reliable and useful. As long as you are consistently scoring between 65-70% you will pass and if you are consistently scoring more than 70%, you will kill this exam.

Speaking of Dr. Daugherty, he has a VERY USEFUL website with free information on how to tackle the USMLEs (it is usmlethought.com - be sure to add the www!). His exam strategies included in this qbook were very helpful to me even though I did not follow those suggestions of his that didn't work with my studying/exam taking style. The most useful take home message that Dr. Daugherty gives in this book and his website is that the Steps are two fold:

1. They test your understanding of medical knowledge and your skill to reason and think like a physician in clinical vignette setting; and

2. They test your test-taking skills - your ability to pace yourself and maintain your concentration for 8 to 9 hours. Timing and concentration is KEY to doing well on this exam.

Overall, this book was useful to me. Hence, I give it 5 stars!

A tangible gift to those seeking to make peace with loss

Brave souls, enter here. Torn and ragged souls, enter here. Weary and desperate souls, enter here. Whether you are familiar with writing or haven't the faintest clue, Sheila Bender has designed a well-thought series of writing exercises to help you explore and make peace with your grief and loss. She provides writing models with complementary prompts and questions. Caution: there will be tears and laughter. However, through each writing assignment, I found that while I was making peace with my grief and giving it a place in my heart, I was allowing myself to see and feel the goodness of the past and the present moment. Sorrow's Words is a tangible gift to those who want to make sense of their world after the death of a loved one. For me, Sheila Bender provided the guidance I sought and could not find. My world (inner and outer) is a healthier and happier place because of her thoughtful guidance.

An invaluable and beautifully written guide on expressing personal loss

Sheila Bender's book on writing about sorrow is a map to the tender and hurting parts of our psyches after a terrible loss. Each chapter lets us immerse ourselves in that sorrow, one inch at a time. We go into the murky waters up to our ankles, then ours waists, then our chests as we slowly test the current of our grief. I felt as if the sister I lost to Leukemia was on the journey with me, looking over my shoulder to see what I had written, sometimes taking the pen in her own hand when I couldn't continue. Sheila poses the question: how can we possibly write after a terrible loss? Is it worthwhile? Isn't it selfish? Writing is, after all, a personal task, something we do for ourselves. But after going through these exercises I knew it was not selfish at all; it was necessary for my survival as a healthy, living person.
No matter how long ago you suffered your loss, this book will help you write about the person and about your relationship with him/her. The exercises open you to honestly expressing your emotions as you come to terms with the absence of your loved one. I felt, after finishing just two chapters, that I had uncovered memories about my sister and our lives together that otherwise I never would have remembered.
I highly recommend this book. It is beautifully written and an invaluable tool of healing.

Sheila Bender’s book, "Sorrow’s Words" has the right mix of heart and mind. It is honest in its emotion, yet instructional. She works with the reader to not only share an understanding of what it means to grieve, but then to show how to move forward and heal. Having looked to past poets herself for inspiration and following colleagues’ advice to publish, she illustrates how working together can be one of the best tools to continue to live deeply. She offers writing prompts throughout the book, meant to get the reader’s creative and cognitive wheels turning toward writing. Although this book is directed toward readers who have experienced the death of a loved one, I find the prompts very useful for writing to heal from other forms of loss, such as ruptured relationships and breakups, or even loss of one’s self.

This book is a tad pricey but well worth it, if you're seriously interested in learning about Small Engines, he starts off at A and goes completely to Z. Evening describing a great deal if not all the tools needed, in detail. If you're an expert in the field you may or may not find much help, but if you're a beginner or intermediate skill level this is "The Book"

The characterization of obesity as a threat to society caused by the cumulative effect of individual lifestyles has led to the politicization of daily choices, habits and practices as potential threats. This book critically examines these unquestioned assumptions about obesity and lifestyle, and their relation to wider debates surrounding neoliberal governmentality, biopolitical regulation of populations, discipline of bodies, and the possibility of community resistance.

The rationale for this book follows Michel Foucault’s approach of problematization, addressing the way lifestyle is problematized as a biopolitical domain in neoliberal societies. Mayes argues that in response to the threat of obesity, lifestyle has emerged as a network of disparate knowledges, relations and practices through which individuals are governed toward the security of the population’s health. Although a central focus is government health campaigns, this volume demonstrates that the network of lifestyle emanates from a variety of overlapping domains and disciplines, including public health, clinical medicine, media, entertainment, school programs, advertising, sociology and ethics.

This book offers a timely critique of the continued interventions into the lives of individuals and communities by government agencies, private industries, medical and non-medical experts in the name of health and population security and will be of interests to students and scholars of critical international relations theory, health and bioethics and governmentality studies.

Hemingway's famously plain declarative sentences linger in the mind like poetry: "Brett was damned good-looking. She wore a slipover jersey sweater and a tweed skirt, and her hair was brushed back like a boy's. She started all that." His cast of thirtysomething dissolute expatriates--Brett and her drunken fiancé, Mike Campbell, the unhappy Princeton Jewish boxer Robert Cohn, the sardonic novelist Bill Gorton--are as familiar as the "cool crowd" we all once knew. No wonder this quintessential lost-generation novel has inspired several generations of imitators, in style as well as lifestyle.

Jake Barnes, Hemingway's narrator with a mysterious war wound that has left him sexually incapable, is the heart and soul of the book. Brett, the beautiful, doomed English woman he adores, provides the glamour of natural chic and sexual unattainability. Alcohol and post-World War I anomie fuel the plot: weary of drinking and dancing in Paris cafés, the expatriate gang decamps for the Spanish town of Pamplona for the "wonderful nightmare" of a week-long fiesta. Hemingway's First Masterpiece!

This, friends, was the single book that so fatefully launched Ernest Hemingway's amazing and long-lived literary career. As such it is as close to being a legendary book as they come, yet some seventy five years after its initial publication, it still offers a story that is also surprisingly fresh, personal, and memorable. For all of his obvious excesses, Hemingway was an artist compelled to delve deliberately into painful truths, and he attempted to do so with a style of writing that cut away all of the frills and artifice, so that at it s heart this novel is meant as a exploration into what it means to be adult and alive. Thus we are introduced to Jake Barnes, a veteran of World War One, now forced by his wounds to live as a man without the ability to act like one, forced by impotence to forgo all of life's usual intimacies, and all of its associated life connections for which he so yearns. At the same time, Jake attempts to live a life of meaning and purpose, one crammed full with activity, work, and friendships. Yet it is within this network of friendships and connections that he must confront his painful circumstances.

Enter his true love, the feckless Lady Ashley, and indeed the plot thickens, for we soon see how Jake's physical affliction has painfully affected several others. Ashley loves him, but needs a virile man who can give her the physical love she needs. While Ashley is a woman of uncommon beauty, she is also virtuous enough in her won way to want the one man she truly loves to be her lover. Like all of us, she wants most that which she can never have, and so she returns to the source of her own dilemma time after time to Jake, her emotional match, the one man who cannot give her the mature emotional love she craves. So they are condemned to circle around each other, even while some of their friends and other members of the in-crowd interfere, compete, and seek Ashley's affections around the edges of the continuing affair.
What we are left with is a modern tragedy, one in which the characters must somehow resolve the irresolvable.

Yet for all this emotional turmoil and existential `sturm-und-drang' of the so-called "lost generation", people drowning in the moral anomie and circumstantial wasteland created in the gutters of their own endless wants and needs, it is most often Hemingway's imaginative and spare use of the language itself that wins the reader over. Unlike his predecessors, he sought a lean narrative style that cut away at all the flowery description and endless adjectives. In the process of parsing away the excesses, Hemingway created a clear, simple and quite declarative prose style that was truly both modern and revolutionary. What one encounters as a result is a story seemingly stripped to its barest essentials, superficially more like the newspaper man's pantheon of who, what, where, when, and why, and yet somehow transformed into a much more accurate and imaginative effort, one leaving the reader with a much more artful account of what is going on. One reads Hemingway quickly, at least at first, when one learns to slow down and drink in every word and every detail as it is related. For me and for millions of others, the true genius of Hemingway is to be found in his artful use of language. This book was Hemingway's first truly successful foray into the world of letters, and the result changed the face of modern fiction. Enjoy!

Hemingway rules! Rargh!

The Sun Also Rises is one of the few works of literature that shook me to the core, along with Remarque's Three Comrades, Gorky's autobiography, and Chekhov's The Lady With The Dog. I read a page and I was hooked. Bam, just like that. I read the thing in a day. In several hours, actually. And then I went and devoured the rest of the man's literary oeuvre. It's just that great. All the greater because when you really look at it, there's no dramatic action going on here - just some people talking, then going to Spain to see the bullfights. But don't let that fool you - boring this book ain't.
Jake Barnes, like most of the characters, is a veteran of World War I. A very unfortunate wound left physical love a complete impossibility for him, and thus he is left gnashing his teeth watching the woman he loves run around with all sorts of men. The Jewish Robert Cohn, who learned boxing in college in order to conquer his feelings of inferiority, happens to become smitten with her as well. Somehow, they and some of their friends and acquaintances end up going to Spain to experience the Fiesta, and while their experience starts the same giddy, frenzied, hedonistic way as for most people, it ends quite differently, when the book's darker undercurrents come to light. Insert scenes of cafe life, fishing, reminiscences, conversations with friends, watching the bullfights, some absolutely brutal humor, and lots and lots of liquor, and you've got yourself Hemingway's first masterpiece. Every element of every great Hemingway book can be seen here - plenty of vivid descriptions; moments of strange, elegiac melancholy; the human spirit fighting against the world; loneliness, isolation, and endurance. They're all here.
For some reason, this book seems to draw accusations of anti-Semitism. And all I've to say on that topic is: What? Anti-Semitism? Here? Please, what is this you speak of? Sure, Cohn's a Jew. And sure, the characters aren't too fond of him. And yet, Hemingway presents him in a very, very sympathetic light. Sure, we're rooting for Jake Barnes because he's smarmy and witty and cool, but when we see Cohn break down in tears in his hotel room because ..., he was naive enough to _believe_ Brett loved him, how can you possibly say Hemingway had any anti-Semitic sentiments on his mind? No, no, no, and a thousand times no. This is not a book about Jews, or Americans, or Britishers. This is a book about _people_, about young people searching for substance in a world that has none, trying to build up some sort of semblance of a normal life after having been through war. This is a book about people who feel life has passed them all by, and who have nothing to really look forward to. This book is filled with the genuine bitter loneliness of people who see nothing ahead of them. The sense of hopeless longing for something better permeates every page.
The Sun Also Rises is the sound of people trying to find a purpose for themselves in an increasingly shallow world. And lest that not convince you to read it, it happens to rock .... Rarely have I read more bitingly acerbic insults and comebacks, wry and cynical remarks, and deadly accurate observations. Actually, rarely have I ever felt so drawn in to the world of a book as much as here. I identified with Jake Barnes and Bill Gorton and that Englishman they met while fishing and with the boozing Mike and with Cohn. I understood their copious drinking and verbal barb-flinging because I was struck by the moments of absolutely believable fragile vulnerability that lay underneath the surface. The subtle gestures, the shifts in tone, the tough, terse prose all added to the various effects when necessary. When I was done, the book left an indelible stamp on my mind. And what higher recommendation could anyone possibly give a book than that?

Interesting and insightful - but not necessarily enjoyable to read

I have mixed feelings about this novel. On one level I appreciate it for the fine literary work that it is. In particular, I admire Hemmingway's use of symbolism throughout the novel. But at the same time, this isn't a novel I enjoyed reading. The novel features a cast of characters that are not especially likable and the first third of the novel moves a little too slowly (Jake and his friends lead aimless lives -and the first part of the novel is pretty aimless).

Jake and his fellow expatriates spend the entire novel getting drunk, being drunk, or recovering from having been drunk (or `tight' as they like to say). They pass their days eating, drinking and being as insensitive as possible to one another. It would be easy to dismiss these characters as unpleasant, and therefore uninteresting, but in the context of the years following WWI, I found myself feeling some sympathy for them.

Simply put, they're damaged goods. Jake, Mike, and Bill all fought in WWI(Jake becoming less of a man as a result) and were forever affected by it. They are now lost, drowning their empty aimless lives in alcohol.

Arguably, the most interesting character in the novel is Lady Ashley (Brett) who is a toxic influence on nearly every man she encounters. Jake, Mike, and Cohn are all in love with her to varying degrees and pay an emotional price as a result. Brett's self centered behaviour complicates the lives of the men who are enamored by her. Jake, who is impotent because of the war, demonstrates his love for Brett by helping her pursue men and then picking up the pieces when the affair ends badly.

There is no happiness for the lost generation in The Sun Also Rises and considerable irony in the novel's final sentence. I found this to be an interesting and insightful novel but I can't say I really `enjoyed' reading it. As a literary work this novel warrants 4 stars. As entertainment: 2 stars. Overall: 3 stars.
