Flight: A Novel, by Sherman Alexie

The best-selling author of multiple award-winning books returns with his first novel in ten years, a powerful, fast and timely story of a troubled foster teenager — a boy who is not a “legal” Indian because he was never claimed by his father — who learns the true meaning of terror. About to commit a devastating act, the young man finds himself shot back through time on a shocking sojourn through moments of violence in American history. He resurfaces in the form of an FBI agent during the civil rights era, inhabits the body of an Indian child during the battle at Little Big Horn, and then rides with an Indian tracker in the 19th Century before materializing as an airline pilot jetting through the skies today. When finally, blessedly, our young warrior comes to rest again in his own contemporary body, he is mightily transformed by all he’s seen. This is Sherman Alexie at his most brilliant — making us laugh while breaking our hearts. Simultaneously wrenching and deeply humorous, wholly contemporary yet steeped in American history, Flight is irrepressible, fearless, and again, groundbreaking Alexie.

From Publishers Weekly
A deadpan "Call Me Zits" opens the first novel in 10 years from Alexie (Smoke Signals, etc.), narrated by a self-described "time-traveling mass murderer" whose name and deeds unravel as this captivating bildungsroman progresses. Half-Indian, half-Irish, acne-beset Zits is 15: he never knew his alcoholic father; his mother died when he was six; his aunt kicked him out when he was 10 (after he set her sleeping boyfriend on fire because the boyfriend had been forcing Zits to have sex). Running away from his 20th foster home, Zits ends up, briefly, in jail; soon after, he enters a bank, shoots several people and is shot dead himself. Zits then commences time-traveling via the bodies of others, finding himself variously lodged in an FBI agent in the '70s (helping to assassinate radical Indian activists); a mute Indian boy at the Battle of Little Big Horn; an Indian tracker named Gus; an airplane pilot instructor (one of whose pupils commits a terrorist act); and his own father. Zits eventually comes back to himself and to an unexpected redemption. While the plot is wisp-thin, one quickly surrenders to Zits's voice, which elegantly mixes free-floating young adult cynicism with a charged, idiosyncratic view of American history. Alexie plunges the book into bracing depths. (Apr.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
His first novel in over a decade, Sherman Alexie's Flight winds themes of alienation, revenge, and forgiveness through its narrator's time-traveling adventures. Critics were impressed with the clever Zits: his thoughts and actions are both humorous and painfully genuine, the essence of troubled adolescence. However, reviewers complained about the lack of depth, of fully developed secondary characters, and of historical detail. Many critics also noted that the plot's swift pace and tidy ending were more appropriate for juvenile fiction. The New York Times, on the other hand, considered these elements part of the novel's charm. Though Alexie's latest effort may disappoint some readers, many will still find snatches of his trademark humor and moving prose.

From Booklist
It's tough enough to be an orphan and a ward of the state, let alone a so-called half-breed. Heck, being 15 years old is no freaking picnic, especially if your face is so badly marred by acne your nickname is Zits. Add to that a devastating history of abuse, and no wonder Zits, a gun in each hand, is about to exact revenge on strangers in a bank. Has Alexie, a high-profile writer known for provocative, inventive, in-your-face fiction about Native American life, written a classic troubled youth-turned-killer tale? Of course not. This is a time-travel fable about the legacy of prejudice and pain. Zits is inexplicably catapulted back to 1975, where he inhabits the body of a white FBI agent confronting radical Indian activists, the first episode in an out-of-body odyssey. Smart, funny, and resilient, Zits is profoundly transformed, as the hero in a tale of ordeals is supposed to be, by his shape-shifting experiences as an Indian boy at Little Big Horn, an Indian tracker, a homeless Indian drunk, and a pilot in unnerving proximity to a Muslim terrorist. Alexie's concentrated and mesmerizing novel of instructive confrontations is structured around provocative variations on the meanings and implications of flight as it asserts that people of all backgrounds are equally capable of good and evil. An exploration of issues faced by children of Indian descent in foster care, and a plea on their behalf
By E. Glenn Anaiscourt
One of the things I like about Sherman Alexie is how little he seems to care what anyone else thinks about what he is doing. He just does it. So "Flight" comes across to me as honest. I find honesty to be one of Alexie’s most appealing qualities as a writer.

“Flight” is an exploration of how to grapple with and respond to oppression. One option is through violence: Alexie’s central character Michael, a.k.a. Zits, is a troubled teen driven out of desperation to the point of committing an atrocity. In the name of “justice,” which is both personified as a human character and symbolized in the form of firearms, Michael is prepared to commit a mass shooting of numerous, mostly Euro-American people who happen to be present when he goes to rob a bank.

Michael is prevented from completing this violent act through a divine intervention which sends him traveling through time and across different personalities so that he can better understand who and where he is. In the course of his Flight, Michael considers his act within the context of such historical events as the Battle of the Little Bighorn, 9-11 and similar terrorist acts, and Ghost Dances performed by Indians who hoped to make Euro-Americans disappear entirely and forever.

Michael remarks that Crazy Horse, “the greatest warrior in Sioux history[,] is a half-breed mystery” and concludes that a successful Ghost Dance would destroy not just Euro-America, but him along with it since he is the product of an intermarriage between an Indian and a Euro-American. Alexie frames the question of whether and how to exercise individual power over the lives and deaths of other people – not just in reality, but also in the imagination – in terms of whether Michael should be willing to kill a random Euro-American if it means he can have his deceased mother back. She was, incidentally, of Irish descent.

Through his Flight, Michael is able to transcend himself and thus ultimately concludes that the violent choice would constitute an act of treason against humanity, and against his own sense of humanity. This conclusion is valuable to him not so much as an Indian person or as a complete and permanent solution to his personal problems, but as a young man in trouble who needs to acquire powerful psychological weapons to combat the effects of the negative, self-indulgent, and insensitive authority figures who traumatized him in his early life.

Some of the people whom Michael inhabits during his Flight seem so different from him initially as to be anathema and impossible to connect to his own perspective. First, for example, he is forced to confront ugliness, irony, confusion, hypocrisy, and social complexity head-on in the shoes of a white FBI agent dealing with Indians who secretly collaborated with the agency on a reservation in the 1970s. Michael questions whether he can legitimately challenge the atrocities against Indians of the FBI agent whom he inhabits if he himself was willing to shoot random bystanders during a bank robbery. Believing he has already committed the mass shooting and after spending some time living from the agent’s perspective, Michael decides he is no better than the FBI agent.

Michael later finds himself incarnated as a boy at home with his family in an intact Indian community at the site of the impending Battle of the Little Big Horn. As the boy, Michael is voiceless because a white soldier cut his throat on a prior occasion. As Custer’s Last Stand unfolds according to historical fact rather than familiar legend, Michael contemplates revenge, cycles of violence, and their consequences.

He then finds himself in the form of a 19th century Irish soldier (an ancestor on his mother’s side?) at the scene of an U.S. Army massacre of an Indian community. As this nightmare unfolds, Michael is struck by the act of a white U.S. “traitor” who deserts to try to save an Indian boy from the slaughter even though this act will likely prove futile and suicidal. In contemplation of betrayal, which is an overarching theme of the book, Alexie conveys the message that the real traitors at the site of the massacre are not deserters, but soldiers who comply. Acts of violence perpetrated against other people constitute a form of treason. Those few who see reality for what it is at the time events unfold and who choose to stand on the side of real justice do not enjoy glory. They are martyred unceremoniously, but preserve their humanity as they make their own, anonymous "last stands."

Michael’s Indian father is a mystery to him because he disappeared soon after Michael was born. Michael’s Irish-American mother cherished him until she passed away while Michael was still very young. As an orphan of mixed heritage, Michael was subsequently neglected, abused, and then abandoned by his Euro-American relatives, and wound up in the foster care system. The father Michael never knew embodies the confusion and complexity in his family background.

In Michael's final incarnation during the Flight and before he returns to himself, he steps into his father’s shoes and comes to understand some of the reasons that he abandoned his wife and baby son. Understanding his father better helps Michael begin to move past anger, resentment, confusion, and insecurity, and to possibly embrace a more loving life in a healthy and positive environment with the “almost real family,” as he calls it, into which he is finally placed.

Flight is an exploration of issues faced by children of Indian descent in foster care, and a plea on their behalf.

a 15-year-old at-risk Native American foster kid with bad acne, serious issues and a big heart
By Stigmata67
My first Alexie book. It's YA, but it doesn't read that way. The narrator, a 15-year-old at-risk Native American foster kid with bad acne, serious issues and a big heart, is as compelling in his way as Holden Caufield, and a lot more sympathetic. He's angry and confused and alone, the kind of kid who needs a shot of serious kindness and a big life-jolt to shake him out of his adolescent rage-storm. He gets the jolt before he gets the kindness in a way that might put the reader in mind of "Quantum Leap" crossed with "Little Big Man." It's a terrific quick read, and I look more forward to indulging in some of his work for growed-up folk.

Flight Review
By Colleen Kennelly
Overall, Flight was a good book. The setting of the book is in 2007 Seattle, Washington. Zits a troubled teen whose lost his mother to breast cancer and whose father ran out on him very young. After having another run in with the police, Zits meets a kid named Justice in "kid jail". Zits and Justice have a very deep conversation about life and learn to "love" each other. When released Zits decides to meet up with Justice so they can become closer friends. Little does Zits know that Justice will persuade Zits to shoot down a bank. So, because of Justice's persuasion, Zits goes into a bank and shoots it down killing many people; including himself. When Zits wakes up he find himself in a different body. This happens 6 times as he goes through 6 different characters. He becomes an FBI agent gone bad, a cavalry soldier, a cheating husband, his runaway father, a little Native American boy under U.S army attack, and obviously, himself. When Zits wakes up from his "dream" he realizes he is in the bank with no one dead. After leaving the bank, Zits goes to turn himself in because he had the idea of shooting the bank down. Finally, after later being declared no longer a threat to society Zits gets put in a foster family with his parole officer's brother. He quickly grows to love them and earns his real name back, Michael.

The Art and Science of Successful Packaging

This new addition to the series will provide readers with a thoughtful packaging primer that covers the challenges of designing packaging for a competitive market in a very hardworking and relevant way. The book will address all aspects of the creative process including choosing a package format, colors and materials, final finishes, and special considerations such as awkward objects and unique display considerations. This book will break down the process of design in a much more comprehensive way than most books on the subject, which just analyze the final designs.

As with the previous books in the series, it will also offer case studies in the back half of the book with the text focusing on why specific colors, formats, type treatments, and finishes were chosen, and what the resulting effects on the consumer and for the client were.

Fantastic Textbook Primer on Package Design
By Richard Bird
This is one of the best books on package design I've seen in many years.

Whether you are a student, junior designer, marketing professional, advertising executive, brand manager - or, anyone who will play any role in the package design process - this is a must-have reference. It should be required reading for the same list.

I am founder and principal of my own package design firm for more than 25 years. Even so, this is a refreshing reminder of the "how and why" of what we do.

The writing is to-the-point and without much of the useless design-speak one might expect. With high-quality images the book covers the entire process, reasoning and importance of packaging. Examples range from big-picture concepts to required details.

Well-done.

I was required to purchase this book for my package design course at my university and I am real impressed with the layout and information in this book. The photography is excellent and the book contains Q/A interviews with famous designers which turn out to be very interesting and helpful. The price on Amazon was cheaper than at my university bookstore so I am happy.

It could ALMOST even a coffee table book, because it's not that thick, has a pretty cover and is interesting. It helped me out in my final portfolio preparation too, because it gave me really good advice and ideas for how to create a portfolio for my designs. Good book!!

Amazon.com Review
British boy with catchy name and unusual powers, check. Wild hair, check. Students at boarding school, check. Owls and funny street names, check. Mysterious shape-shifting enemies out to get the affable boy protagonist, check. Jenny Nimmo's "Children of the Red King" series (starring Charlie Bone) has so many of the same trappings as the Harry Potter series that, unfortunately, comparison is unavoidable. Rowling's books clearly trump these simpler fantasies for younger readers--but the Charlie Bone books are finding their audience in those who need a boy-wizard fix and need it now.

Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy, the third book in the author's planned quintet, begins when the magically "endowed" Charlie and his friend Emma discover a mostly invisible, strawberry jam-loving boy named Ollie Sparks imprisoned in the attic of the Hogwartsian Bloor's Academy. Ollie's plight is part of a seemingly amorphous Larger Evil Plot involving school authorities, a blue boa, and Charlie's three horrible great aunts. Charlie Bone and his friends are eager to fight wrongdoing with their combination of special powers, but obstacles in all shapes and sizes abound. Can the children rescue Ollie, Charlie's uncle, Ollie's older brother, and the other hapless victims...or are the enemies too plentiful and powerful? Despite the likeable Charlie and a plethora of magical happenings (raining frogs, sorcerers who escape paintings, etc.), reading this 408-page fantasy feels like a bit like running a marathon where the finish line feels farther away with every step. Thankfully, the ending is a happy one. (Ages 10 and older) --Karin Snelson

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7–In this third installment in the series, another semester at Bloor Academy is about to begin, and, as usual, chaos ensues. At home, Charlie's Uncle Paton disappears, then returns ill and powerless. Charlie's friend Benjamin heads off to Hong Kong, and his grandmother Maisie leaves to take care of her sick sister. At the same time, a new and sinister student named Belle arrives and quickly establishes herself as a force to be reckoned with. A new art teacher has joined the staff to find his younger brother, Ollie Sparks, turned invisible by a blue boa (snake, though there are feathers involved) controlled by the evil Ezekiel Bloor. Charlie and his friends try to come up with ways to help Ollie and Billy Raven, the poor orphan being manipulated and tormented by the Bloor clan. One of the strengths of this story (and the whole series) is the way both regular people and those who are magically endowed work toward common goals. A weakness is the lack of progress toward identifying and rescuing Charlie's father, who is barely mentioned in this outing. Still, it's a wild roller-coaster ride of a story, and will more than satisfy not only fans of this series, but those who are exhibiting symptoms of Harry Potter withdrawal.–Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist
Gr. 5-7. The series continues with Charlie Bone and his friends at Bloor Academy, where, this time, they must save Ollie Sparks, who has become invisible following an encounter with a magical blue boa constrictor. Charlie has other problems, too: his nasty aunts are definitely up to something mean. When Charlie's uncle Paton disappears and a new girl with eyes that constantly change color shows up at his house, the adventure is on! Characters are introduced quickly at the beginning, but it isn't necessary to have read the first two books to enjoy this one. Readers will quickly sort out the personalities and settle into the story of magically talented friends--from Billy who speaks to animals to Tancred who can call down the weather--coming together to solve a mystery. The novel's length may be initially daunting for some young readers, but the type is large and generously spaced. Cindy Welch

I bought this book (and two others from this same seller) for my 10-year-old son based on a recommendation from his teacher, as she knows my son has really liked the Michigan Chillers and American Chillers books (oh yeah, and the Goosebumps books). I'll try to update this review once my son reads the book and comments about it (after Christmas), but as for the condition of this book (it was purchased "used" from this seller), it was virtually impossible to tell the difference between this "used" book and a new one. It is in like-new condition, so I'm very happy with the book as it exceeded my expectations on its condition. 5-stars.

Charlie Bone is a great Read.
By Juliet
Charlie Bone is a great read for children. My 6th grader is actually interested in reading this book. She has read about 5 of them so far. She has read them very fast as I have not really made her read these books. She wanted to read these, which is rare! The plot is similiar to Harry Potter but the lanauge is easier for the younger kids to read and the book is shorter which is good for them. You are able to find cheap used ones here on Amazon or buy at local book store becuase these books are very popular with the kids right now. Both girls and boys like Charlie Bone.

Your self, aware presence, knows no resistance to any appearance and, as such, is happiness itself; like the empty space of a room, it cannot be disturbed and is, therefore, peace itself; like this page, it is intimately one with whatever appears on it and is thus love itself; and like water that is not affected by the shape of a wave, it is pure freedom. Causeless joy, imperturbable peace, love that knows no opposite, and freedom at the heart of all experience…this is your ever-present nature under all circumstances.

Review
“Presence is a profound and luminous book with great power and is obviously the fruit of many years of contemplation. These two volumes together are a relentless and utterly thorough examination of the nature of experience, exploring every square centimeter of the territory with absolute excellence and ruthlessly precise analysis. Their astuteness and clarity will be extremely exciting to those readers who are ready for the next steps in lifting the veil of separation, and I suspect it will become a spiritual classic that readers will savor slowly and return to again and again.”
—Victoria Ritchie, former manager of Watkins Bookshop and editor for Eckhart Tolle

“It seems that every generation produces a few unusually clear voices that call us back to our essential, undivided nature. Rupert Spira is such a voice, and the collection of essays in these two volumes are his songs, his hymns of remembrance and celebration. As with any song, we must be available to truly hear it. These overlapping writings are meant to be carefully pondered in order for their underlying, vibrant Silence to be heard and felt. Savor them slowly as you would a fine wine, a delicious meal, or an exceptionally beautiful sunset. Let the wisdom and love from which they come saturate you. Feel how they act on you. That in you which knows and loves the truth will respond to their call to come home to who you really are.”
—John J. Prendergast, PhD, professor of psychology (emeritus) at California Institute of Integral Studies, author of Listening from the Heart of Silence and In Touch

About the Author
From an early age, Rupert Spira was deeply interested in the nature of reality. At the age of seventeen he learned to meditate, and began a twenty-year period of study and practice in the classical Advaita Vedanta tradition under the guidance of Dr. Francis Roles and Shantananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of the north of India. During this time, Spira immersed himself in the teachings of P. D. Ouspensky, Krishnamurti, Rumi, Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj, and Robert Adams, until he met his teacher, Francis Lucille, in 1997. Lucille introduced Spira to the Direct Path teachings of Atmananda Krishna Menon, the Tantric tradition of Kashmir Shaivism (which he had received from his teacher, Jean Klein), and, more importantly, directly indicated to him the true nature of experience. Spira lives in the UK and holds regular meetings and retreats in Europe and the United States.

Although at times too abstract the book is a good discussion of historical writing. It is not an easy read but it is very rewarding. I was a better student of history after I read it.

Jawa: Lost City of the Black Desert, by S. W. Helms

Svend Helms' work offers a fascinating exploration of the lost city of Jawa, an ancient, ruined city that lies in the basalt desert of northeast Jordan - a desolate region swept by sandstorms, where temperatures vary through extremes. Today only Bedouin venture across the Black Desert, but five thousand years ago Jawa thrived there briefly as an urban center of considerable complexity. Discovered by aviators in 1931, Jawa's ruins were only recently excavated. Strangely, the harsh environment has protected the city - no settlement was ever built upon Jawa's ruins - making it the best preserved Bronze Age city yet known. Helms was director of excavation at the twenty-two acre site.

Outstanding study of how - long ago - very long ago (the Bronze age?) - people would live and survive in the Desert - developing water harvesting techniques with an incredible energy and know-how. This study was done without the now available help of the modern Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System - Helms and collaborators are presenting here a fascinating account with numerous drawings, hypothesis - possible explanation of the life-support systems with details of (the possible) material requirement and labour-time to build and maintain the water harvesting structures at Jawa in the black basalt desert of North-Eastern present Jordan- a unique contribution to understanding how water harvesting techniques work in the desert ! a "must read" for all people working these days on water harvesting techniques and desert development.
